On a long day of jury duty (I ended up not being picked), I put together a post on my third Reason Not To Be Cheerful (see below). When I was done, I realized it had more than a passing resemblance to an honest-to-gosh essay. So I submitted it to the Review section of the Chronicle of Higher Education. My editor there said she liked it but some of her colleagues felt it seemed “too much like a blog post.” That gave me the chance to use, for the first and I hope the last time in my life, this cliche: “It is what it is.”
Ultimately, the decision came back that it was enough like an essay to publish it. So I will hold off on posting it here till after it appears in the Chronicle. In the meantime, I will ponder what exactly the difference is between an essay and a blog post, and whether or when that difference will no longer exist. And for my next post here, I will leave off kvetching mode and list the things I like about my job. Watch this space.
