We got the annual parents’ letter from Dr. J, the “master” of Maria’s dorm. What popped out for me was the list of guests at the “Master’s Teas”—weekly gatherings where students can have some cookies and hot beverages and get up close and personal with distinguished visitors. Here’s this year’s lineup:
Judy Blume, author; Henry Donahue, publisher, Discover magazine; Steven Newhouse, CEO, Advance.net publications; Robin Kelley, author Thelonius Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original; Patrick Keefe, author, The Snakehead; Soledad O’Brien, CNN anchor; Dorie Greenspan, baker; and Louise Gluck, poet laureate of the United States.
And that’s just the fall semester!
Upcoming for the spring are: Dr. Ruth Westheimer, “personal intimacy expert”; Parick Catullo, Broadway producer; Nick Thompson, senior editor Wired magazine; John Tierney, columnist, New York Times; Sandra Boynton, graphic artist; Valerie Tripp, author, American Girl series; Weston Sprott and Lawrence Brownleee, the Metropolitan Opera; “and another special guest or two, yet to be confirmed.”
I usually get myself a cup of tea in the afternoons and watch a Sports Center rerun. Not quite the same.
