On Saturday, I finished a three-session, weekly writing workshop for middle schoolers. It was sponsored by and held at Mighty Writers, a Philadelphia outfit started up and headed by my friend Tim Whitaker, a veteran writer and editor here, and inspired, I believe, by Dave Eggers’ similar efforts in San Francisco and other cities. Mighty Writers, based in a spiffy storefront on the edge of South Philadelphia, offers Philadelphia-area teens and school kids writing workshops and homework help, and in general supports the idea that writing is a good thing, in a lot of ways.
I had a great time working with Raia, Juliet, Dylan, and Michael. I almost couldn’t believe that these talented kids gave up a big chunk of their Saturday afternoons to come downtown to talk about writing. And believe me, they talked. Compared to my often passive, too-cool-for-school college students, these kids really brought it: sharing their observations, giving great answers to my questions, offering generous notes to each other’s work.
Kind of renewed my faith in education.
