The English Department of which I’m a member is going on an all-day retreat this Friday, all 50-odd (and not-odd) of us. In preparation, the facilitator sent along a memo that asked us to answer the following questions:
Regarding the retreat day, what is the most important outcome of the day for you? What is the greatest challenge facing the English department? What should the English department most value? What THREE (3) things should the English department be (i.e., what is your vision)?*(*although vision is an image of the future you wish to create, your answer could include activities currently in practice.) What are 1-2 recent scholarly activities of which you are proud? What is a current scholarly activity in which you are engaged that excites you?
To quote Huck Finn (in discussing the “statements” he encountered while reading Pilgrim’s Progress), the questions are “interesting, but tough.” Should be quite a day. If I survive it, I will report.
* on the heading: I couldn’t resist a Springsteen reference on the night when Gigi is going to see the Boss for what must be at least the fiftieth time. Ask her about it some time.
